A Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare hospital is about to break ground on a renovation and expansion project that will make the emergency department a bit roomier.

July 30, brg3s architects filed a $5.4 million permit to renovate and expand the emergency department of Methodist South Hospital at 1300 Wesley Drive.

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare filed a certificate of need with the state of Tennessee in April to invest more than $8.7 million for the expansion and renovation project.

The project will add more than 12,700 square feet to the 35,000-square-foot emergency department and another 9,900 square feet will be renovated.

The expansion will increase emergency department rooms from 370 square feet to 610 square feet. Once completed, the renovated emergency department will serve as the main entrance for Methodist South.

Allen & Hoshall has been contracted to provide engineering services. The project has an anticipated completion date of October 2016.
