Allen & Hoshall provided engineering services for the new Recreation located at the Martin campus of the University of Tennessee. The facility features a four court gymnasium, racquetball courts, cardio fitness and weight area, offices, aerobics and multi-purpose spaces, running track, and lobby/gathering spaces.
The elements are arranged about a two-story inner lobby with a monumental stair that acts as a hub for the major activities spaces visible in this area and connected to a narrow two-story lobby. The fitness component containing cardiovascular exercise equipment can be viewed as a discreet building with its own internal mezzanine as can the large four-court gymnasium. The locker room / toilet room areas are arranged to accommodate future expansions of an indoor pool and multi-purpose gymnasium.
Entry to the facility shall be at one point on the east elevation (main entrance). All other exterior doors are essentially exits which will be alarmed and equipped with delayed egress devises and monitors. Entry points to storage at the west end of the gymnasium will be by controlled access only.
